Methylene blue was invented by the German chemist Heinrich Caro in 1876.
Originally created to colour clothes, methylene blue was soon used for its many medical properties.

Our grandmothers used to treat tonsillitis by dabbing the tonsils with a piece of cotton impregnated with Methylene Blue placed at the end of a rod. This was a common practice for soothing inflammation and disinfecting tonsils.

Methylene blue has a number of properties:
- antiseptic
- anti-microbial
- anti-fungal
- anti-viral
- anti-oxidant
- anti-malaria
- cell protection (DNA, RNA) etc.

Its use was gradually abandoned following the advent of antibiotics in the early 20th century.

For some years now, it has been used to treat serious illnesses such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

It is now used in neurodegenerative diseases and as an energy booster, as well as in psychiatric disorders (antidepressant and anxiolytic).

It has also been used with some success against COVID-19.

Several studies have shown that taking a single oral dose stimulates short-term memory, attention and concentration.

Studies on the effect of methylene blue on intestinal flora at a dose of 15 mg/Kg per day showed no significant change in the microbiome, demonstrating an absence of negative effects even at high doses (greater than 4 mg per Kg body weight).

Methylene blue is included in the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines as an antidote for the treatment of methaemoglobinaemia. Intravenous solution for injection: 10 mg/ml in 10 ml ampoules (i.e. 100 mg per ampoule).

It is also used in cases of cyanide poisoning and urinary tract infections.

It should only be taken by humans in its USP form, i.e. its pharmaceutical quality.

Methylene blue, which is sold as a dye or for disinfecting aquariums, should never be consumed as it can contain high levels of heavy metals.

It is generally accepted that its use in very low doses has no side effects, even when combined with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (the principle of many antidepressants), but caution is still called for in this particular case.

Low doses are generally considered to be : 0.5 mg to 4 mg per day and per kg of body weight.
For an adult weighing 60 kg: between 30 mg and 240 mg per day.

What's more, using very low doses, i.e. doses lower than those mentioned above, often has the same benefits ...

It is generally accepted that for people not suffering from any specific pathology, taking 1 dose (or 2) of a very small quantity of 0.3 to 0.5 mg per kg of weight per day (i.e. for a person weighing 60 kg, a daily dose of 18 to 30 mg of methylene blue) poses no problem, while providing numerous benefits such as increased energy, improved immediate memory and better concentration.

Methylene blue powder should be diluted in water and taken orally.

The most practical dilution is 1 gram for 1 litre of water, which makes a solution to the nearest thousandth, making it very easy to measure out:
1 milligram (mg) = 1 millilitre (ml).

To take 20 mg a day, simply take a 20 ml dose, which is very easy to dose using a syringe, for example

For information :
1 100 ml bottle of a 1% methylene blue solution (the liquid form most commonly sold in pharmacies or on the internet) contains the same amount of methylene blue as 1 litre of a 1 per thousand solution.

The 2 solutions each contain 1 g of methylene blue.
The first solution contains 1 gram diluted in 100 ml of water.
The second solution contains 1 gram diluted in 1000 ml (1 litre) of water.

At a daily dose of 20 mg, each solution contains 50 doses, i.e. 50 days of treatment. 1 gram = 1000 milligrams

Recommended dose :
0.3 mg to 0.5 mg per day and per kg of body weight and up to 4 mg per day and per kg of body weight when treating certain pathologies.
Start with a low dose and increase gradually.

If you don't like its slightly bitter taste, you can add your daily dose to a little fruit juice or another hot or cold drink (coffee, tea, milk, chocolate, etc). I advise you to take a single sip to avoid turning your teeth blue.

You can find a number of videos about Methylene Blue on Youtube.
