JAMBU - Syzygium cuminii (Linn.) Skeels / Eugenia jambolana Lam. (Myrtaceae)

Description :
Throughout the plains from the Himalayas to South India. It is tall much branched tree. The berries are dark purple colour when they obtain maturity.

Uses : Chronic diarrhoea and dysentery.
Diabetes.

Dosage :
1/2 teaspoon thrice daily after meals mixed with some honey or with hot water.

How to Use :
Bark with Cardamom and Cinnamon, is used in decoction in cases of chronic diarrhoea and dysentery and as a gargle in sore-throat, spongy gums, etc. A paste made from the bark is applied over inflamed parts. The tender leave juice alone or combined with carminatives such as cardamoms and cinnamon is given with goat's milk in case of diarrhoea in children. Powdered seeds or kernel of the fruit are used as a remedy for diabetes ; it reduces the quantity of sugar in urine and allays the unquenchable thirst of diabetes. Black Jambal fruit juice and mango juice in equal parts relieves thirst very effectively in diabetes. A syrup prepared from the juice of the ripened fruit is a very pleasant drink. Powdered dried seeds combination with that of mango nut is administered with the dosage of 10 to 30 grains with curds in cases of diarrhoea and dysentery ; also in enlargement of spleen and as a diuretic in scanty or suppressed urine. Syrup or Vinegar prepared from the ripened fruit is also useful in spleen enlargement and an efficient astringent in chronic diarrhoea.
